What good is a society that tries to protect their children through internet filters? We cannot provide protection to our kids by changing reality while hoping that they don’t care. It is not like that proxy filters solve any of our problems; they simply don’t work.
Living in a culture where the only answer is filtering or observation is a shame. Politicians have already capitulated in front of a medium they don’t understand.
What politicians aren’t able to realize is that trying to stop people watching any kind of pornography doesn’t make it go away. It will not disappear just because we route all internet traffic through proxy filters. There is always a (technical) way round the proxy.
The only way of changing behavior is to take people in charge. Show them what the internet is all about. Tell them that they need to care when their kids surf the web. That they don’t look away and that they don’t have to patronize.
The internet is a decentralized network. Of course we can go the Chinese way of observation and arbitrary. But first of all their system doesn’t work. Technically, there are many known programs that are able to bypass state observation.
Second, I don’t want to live in a system, where the only reason for not doing forbidden things is because of my neighbor calling the police. I want to live in a society where we all know about moral, what is acceptable and what hurts other peoples.
I don’t preach for “no sex until marriage” here, but a little bit of respect should be the message of the day. Then we have no need for any kind filters or political statements that are not worth the paper they are written on.
